Pericoli, born on March 22, 1935, in Milan, was a trailblazer for Italian tennis. She reached the last 16 at the French Open twice and made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon three times during her illustrious career. Her talent earned her the top spot in Italian tennis for 14 consecutive years, from 1959 to 1976. In total, she claimed an astounding 27 national titles, a record that cemented her legacy in Italian sports.
But Pericoli didn’t just make waves for her game; she became a fashion icon, showcasing glamorous outfits often featuring feathers, fur, and bold designs. Her unique style brought flair and elegance to the tennis court, making her a favorite with fans and the media alike.

In remembering her legacy, Italian Tennis and Padel Federation president Angelo Binaghi reflected on her influence, stating, “She was like a mother to all of us.” Fellow Italian and current world number one Jannik Sinner paid tribute on Instagram, sharing a photo with Pericoli and writing, “A special moment I will cherish forever. A great lady and a legend of Italian tennis.”
Rafael Nadal, the former world number one from Spain, also honored Pericoli on Instagram, saying, “Thanks for everything. You will always be remembered.”
Pericoli demonstrated resilience throughout his life. She twice overcame cancer, first in 1973 and again in 2012, according to reports from Italian media.
