Harbhajan Singh Highlights Key Challenges for India in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Against Australia and Sri Lanka

Harbhajan Singh, India’s World Cup-winning spinner, highlighted the significant challenges the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team will face from Australia and Sri Lanka in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament kicks off in the UAE on Thursday, with India placed in Group A alongside Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Harbhajan Singh’s concerns stem from India’s historical record against Australia, having lost 23 of their 32 T20I encounters, while managing to win just seven.

“I think India needs to be cautious when facing Australia,” Harbhajan stated during an interview with Star Sports. “With Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in our group, the India-Australia match stands out as particularly challenging.” Despite the matches in Dubai being held on pitches that may not favor Australia as much as their home conditions, he believes they remain a formidable opponent.

Harbhajan also pointed out Sri Lanka as another potential hurdle, noting their recent victory over India in the Asia Cup final, where players Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama excelled. “Sri Lanka, too, will be confident after their recent series win against India, making that matchup exciting,” he added.

Team India boasts a strong squad and stands as one of the tournament favorites. Under Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership, the team has been performing well in 2024, and with the UAE pitches favoring spin, India’s spin bowlers could prove vital. However, Harbhajan Singh emphasized that the team must stay vigilant against the powerful Australian side, known for dominating ICC events.
