In a dramatic turn during the ongoing Irani Cup 2024 at Ekana Cricket Stadium, Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur battled illness, scoring a gritty 36 off 59 balls, then headed to the hospital. Despite running a high fever, Thakur powered through his condition on Day 2, helping Mumbai surpass the 500-run mark.

Teaming up with Sarfaraz Khan, Thakur hit four boundaries and a six, determined to support his side despite needing frequent medical attention. He eventually fell to Saransh Jain in the final over of the day but left the field visibly weakened.
Following his time at the crease, Thakur’s health worsened, prompting immediate hospitalization. Blood tests were conducted to rule out serious illnesses like malaria or dengue. According to reports, doctors will assess his condition overnight before Day 3’s play.
A source close to the team stated, “He wasn’t well throughout the day but insisted on batting despite running a high fever.” This match marks Thakur’s return to competitive cricket after foot surgery, his recent recovery aiming for a strong Irani Cup performance.
Mumbai closed Day 2 at 536/9, led by Sarfaraz Khan’s double century, with contributions from Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Tanush Kotian. Thakur’s absence could affect Mumbai’s balance, but his spirit and commitment shine through as his health remains a top priority.
