Tim Southee has stepped down as New Zealand’s Test captain following the team’s series defeat in Sri Lanka, with Tom Latham set to take over. Southee led New Zealand in 14 Tests, achieving six wins, six losses, and two draws since succeeding Kane Williamson in 2022. Reflecting on his decision, Southee emphasized that stepping aside was in the team’s best interest.

“I’ve always prioritized the team, and this move allows me to focus on my on-field performance,” Tim Southee stated, adding that he remains dedicated to supporting his teammates, especially the younger bowlers.
New Zealand lost both Tests in Sri Lanka, bringing their total to four consecutive defeats. Their next challenge is a three-Test series in India later this month. Tim Southee, who has taken just 12 wickets in his last eight Tests, could face stiff competition for selection in India, with Matt Henry, Will O’Rourke, and Ben Sears also in the mix.
Southee remains committed to New Zealand Cricket, expressing his love for Test cricket and a desire to continue playing. Head coach Gary Stead praised Southee’s humility, calling him a “true team-man” and highlighting his contribution to New Zealand cricket over the past 17 years. Tim Southee is also close to a major milestone, needing 18 wickets to become only the second New Zealand bowler to reach 400 Test wickets.
