Derbyshire Sign Caleb Jewell for the 2025 Season

Derbyshire has signed Australian opener Caleb Jewell as one of their overseas players for the 2025 season. The 27-year-old left-hander, who has represented Australia A, will be available to play across all formats for the club.

Jewell averages 31.47 in first-class cricket and was a key part of Tasmania’s 2023-24 Sheffield Shield campaign, where he hit a career-best 227 against Western Australia. He also represents Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. Although yet to earn a senior cap for Australia, Jewell has impressed selectors with standout performances, including scores of 66, 78, and 131 for Australia A in 2023. His consistent form has placed him in discussions as a potential successor to David Warner or Usman Khawaja at the top of Australia’s Test order.

Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, expressed his excitement about the signing, stating that Jewell has been on his radar for some time. Arthur highlighted positive feedback from Australia’s chief selector George Bailey and Ian Bell, both of whom praised Jewell’s abilities. Arthur emphasized the need for reinforcement in the batting line-up, adding that Jewell will bring much-needed consistency and grit to Derbyshire’s top order.

Jewell, eager for his first taste of county cricket, expressed his enthusiasm by saying he’s looking forward to helping the club win matches. Additionally, he aims to leave a mark in England, much like many of his fellow Australians.

This signing follows a challenging season for Derbyshire, who are set to finish bottom of Division Two in the County Championship but have come close to reaching the knockouts in white-ball formats. Jewell is their second signing for 2025, joining Middlesex allrounder Martin Andersson.
