Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber Set Premier League Record

In a dramatic encounter against Manchester City, Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber made headlines for an unusual reason: both players failed to complete a single pass during the match. Despite their commendable defensive efforts, the duo set an unwanted Premier League record as the first outfield players since Opta began tracking data to play 89-plus minutes without a completed pass.

Arsenal found themselves in a strong position, leading 2-1 after goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel just before halftime. However, the momentum shifted when the referee sent off Leandro Trossard shortly after Gabriel’s goal, forcing Mikel Arteta’s side to fend off relentless pressure for the entire second half. Arsenal’s brave resistance ultimately broke in the 98th minute when John Stones scored to level the match at 2-2.

The late goal kept Arsenal two points behind City in the standings, underscoring the hosts’ dominance in key statistics throughout the match. Havertz and Timber, who spent most of the second half defending within their own half, recorded six and five attempted passes, respectively, all of which failed to connect with a teammate.

Despite the record, both players contributed significantly to Arsenal’s defensive effort, which was particularly commendable given the circumstances. Post-match, Arteta refrained from criticizing Trossard for receiving a needless second yellow card for delaying a restart. Instead, he praised his team’s resilience.

“It’s incredibly difficult to play against this team, especially here, where they haven’t lost in over a year,” Arteta noted. “We struggled to control certain areas early on, leading to their goal, but we responded exceptionally well. The character and personality displayed were remarkable.”

He emphasized the strength of the squad, saying, “For 56 minutes to maintain that level against 10 men is a testament to the team’s readiness in any context. It’s a shame we couldn’t secure a win, but the players showed they have the character to compete at the highest level, even in one of the toughest stadiums in Europe.”

As the season unfolds, Arsenal’s ability to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair will be critical in their pursuit of success.
