Mikel Arteta lauded David Raya for his crucial role in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta in their Champions League opener. Despite Arsenal’s less-than-ideal performance, Raya’s stunning double save from a second-half penalty proved pivotal in securing a point for the Gunners.
The highlight of the match came three minutes into the second half when Raya, after consulting with Arsenal goalkeeping coach Iñaki Caña, made an extraordinary save to deny Mateo Retegui’s penalty. Arteta was full of praise for Raya’s performance, emphasizing that the Spaniard’s actions were among the best saves he has witnessed in his career.
“We gave away a lot of simple balls, but we didn’t suffer defensively. Then David produced two of the best saves I’ve seen,” Arteta remarked. He acknowledged Raya’s impressive form since joining from Brentford, though he stressed that Arsenal’s performance must improve ahead of their clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
When asked if Aaron Ramsdale’s departure had boosted Raya’s confidence, Arteta responded, “That’s something for David to answer. However, he has been exceptional this season. His save against Villa and again today kept us in the game. A goalkeeper at this level must make such crucial saves, and I’m delighted with his current form.”

Raya himself highlighted the importance of guidance from Caña during the match. “I spoke to the goalkeeping coach while the VAR checked the penalty decision. He provided invaluable advice,” Raya said. “I was fortunate to dive the right way and make the initial save. Although the rebound fell to the opponent, I managed to get up quickly and secure the second save. It’s fantastic to help the team earn a point.”
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini was equally impressed by Raya’s performance. “He’s like a cat,” Gasperini said. “The initial save was impressive, but the rebound save was exceptional. I feel sorry for Mateo because it was one of his best performances since joining us.”
Raya’s heroics were a highlight in an otherwise challenging game for Arsenal, and his performance will be crucial as the team prepares for their upcoming fixtures.
