Liam Livingstone aims to use his role in England’s T20I team to secure a recall to the ODI squad. Although Livingstone has been a key finisher for England in the last three T20 World Cups, he showcased his versatility in a recent match against Australia, scoring 37 from No. 4 and taking 3 for 22 with his legbreaks.
Exclusion from the ODI Squad

Despite his strong performance, Livingstone, along with Sam Curran, was notably absent from England’s squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series starting next Thursday. Rob Key informed him of his exclusion, calling it “the old good news, bad news” scenario. This left Livingstone uncertain about how to reclaim his spot in the ODI team.
Challenges of Domestic Competition Overlap
England’s top white-ball players, including Livingstone, no longer participate in domestic 50-over competitions due to overlaps with the Hundred. Livingstone has not played in the County Championship for two years, which complicates his chances of participating in November’s ODI series in the Caribbean or the Champions Trophy in February, where his future may depend on his T20 form.
Embracing a New Role
Livingstone expressed his frustration but remains optimistic, saying, “I’m happy to bat up the order in T20s. The more I bat, the more I can impact games.” At 31, Livingstone acknowledges he must adapt and seize opportunities as they come, despite recent physical setbacks and injuries.
A Stellar International Breakthrough
His international breakthrough was significant, marked by a standout performance in the 2021 T20I series against Pakistan and earning the MVP title in the inaugural Hundred. However, a series of injuries, including an ankle issue before the 2022 T20 World Cup and a knee injury during his Test debut, have hindered his progress.
Looking Ahead with a Fresh Perspective
Now fully fit, Livingstone is eager to prove himself at No. 4 in the T20I series and is determined to use this opportunity to force a selection dilemma for future series. As the second-oldest player in England’s squad, he embraces the role of a mentor, helping younger players while adapting to a refreshed team dynamic with new coaches and strategies.
