On the opening day of the Vitality County Championship match at the Riverside, Durham’s Ben Raine took four crucial wickets for 23 runs, exacerbating Lancashire’s relegation concerns. Raine’s impressive performance came on a day shortened by morning rain, helping Durham reduce Lancashire to 177 for 6 after 78 overs.
Raine capitalized on bowler-friendly conditions, while Matthew Potts supported him with 2 for 36. In contrast, Chemar Holder, making his debut for Durham, struggled, finishing with 0 for 53 from eight overs. The persistent drizzle delayed the start until 12:50, leading Durham captain Scott Borthwick to choose to bowl first after winning the toss.
Lancashire’s innings began poorly, with Raine dismissing Luke Wells for a duck off the game’s first ball and later bowling Keaton Jennings for 9. Josh Bohannon, who scored 49, managed to counterattack against Holder’s wayward bowling before losing Venkatesh Iyer for 7.
Matty Hurst played a crucial innings, scoring 74 not out despite a slow start. He and Bohannon provided a resilient partnership, navigating a challenging pitch and bowlers. Hurst’s innings included seven fours and a six, marking his fourth Championship fifty off 88 balls. However, Lancashire’s innings faltered as George Bell was dismissed for 7, and George Balderson was out for 10, both falling to Potts and Raine respectively.
Despite a solid partnership between Hurst and Tom Hartley, adding 39 runs without losing another wicket, Lancashire still needed 73 more runs to secure their first batting point since July 1. The day concluded with Lancashire in a precarious position, facing increasing pressure as they fight to avoid relegation.
