The Irani Cup 2024 match between Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai and the Rest of India has moved from Mumbai to Lucknow because of persistent rainfall. Originally set for Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the game will now occur at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow from October 1 to October 5.
The authorities decided to move the venue after the extended monsoon conditions in Mumbai made hosting the game unfeasible. Mumbai, led by Ajinkya Rahane, who captained them to a remarkable Ranji Trophy victory earlier this year, will face the Rest of India team.
The Irani Cup is a prestigious domestic cricket competition in India, played annually between the Ranji Trophy winners and a squad selected from top performers in domestic cricket across the country. The trophy was first contested in 1960 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy and was named in honor of Zal R. Irani, an influential figure in the early development of the BCCI.
Saurashtra won the 2023-24 Irani Trophy, while the Rest of India team has won the trophy 30 times, with Mumbai claiming 14 titles. Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer holds the record for most runs in the tournament with 1,294, and Padmakar Shivalkar has the highest wicket tally with 51.
The move to Lucknow will offer a suitable venue for this prestigious clash and ensure the Irani Cup continues to showcase the best of Indian domestic cricket.
