West Indies completed a clean sweep of the T20I series against South Africa, further solidifying their recent dominance in this format. Since March 2023, they have faced South Africa 10 times in T20Is, winning eight matches, including two consecutive 3-0 series victories on either side of the T20 World Cup. The latest win came in a rain-affected match in Trinidad.
Rain Interruptions and Reduced Overs

Rain delayed the series finale by an hour, but play eventually began without a reduction in overs. A second weather interruption during South Africa’s innings reduced the match to 13 overs per side. South Africa managed to score 108 for 4, with Tristan Stubbs being the only standout performer, scoring 40 off 15 balls. The West Indies spinners, Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase, bowled tightly, conceding just 22 runs in their five combined overs. This left West Indies with a revised target of 116.
West Indies’ Steady Chase
In their chase, West Indies stumbled early when Alick Athanaze was caught in the first over, but Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran steadied the innings with a quick 58-run partnership. Hope, remaining unbeaten on 42, combined with Shimron Hetmyer for a 56-run stand that sealed the victory with 22 balls remaining.
Shepherd’s Key Wickets
Romario Shepherd was a key player for West Indies, claiming two crucial wickets in his first over to end the South African charge for runs. Shepherd dismissed Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton in quick succession, stalling South Africa’s momentum.
Stubbs Shines for South Africa
For South Africa, Stubbs continued his good form, having scored a Test fifty earlier in the month. He was their top performer in the T20I series, finishing as the highest run-scorer. However, South Africa’s overall lack of significant contributions from other batters remained a problem throughout the series.
Hetmyer’s Return to Form
Shimron Hetmyer, playing his first T20I of the year, looked sharp and aggressive, scoring 31 off 17 balls. His powerful hitting, including multiple boundaries and a six, helped ensure a comfortable win for West Indies, capping off a dominant series performance.
Dominant Series Performance
Overall, the West Indies showcased a blend of strategic bowling and aggressive batting to complete their sweep and assert their authority in T20 cricket against South Africa.
