Harvey Blair Joins Portsmouth: Liverpool’s Promising Talent Moves on Despite Klopp’s Praise

Liverpool sold promising youngster Harvey Blair to Portsmouth for a fee of £300,000, despite manager Jurgen Klopp’s previous praise of him as a “real talent.”

Blair, 20, is the 12th player to leave Liverpool this summer, following Sepp van den Berg’s £25 million transfer to Brentford. The move to Portsmouth marks a significant step in Blair’s career. Which began with Liverpool at the age of 12 after joining from Manchester United in 2015.

Blair made his sole first-team appearance for Liverpool in October 2021 during an EFL Cup fourth-round match against Preston North End. This debut came just before Liverpool’s triumph in the competition. Where they secured the cup with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Chelsea, ending 11-10.

Jurgen Klopp expressed admiration for Blair after his debut, noting the young forward’s potential despite the challenging circumstances. Klopp commented, “Harvey is a real talent, but offensive players need the right passes and moments. You can’t expect him to outplay four players and score in his first game against a tough opponent.”

Blair expressed his astonishment at the opportunity, sharing his surprise with Liverpool’s club media: “I was thinking, ‘I’m starting what?! This is crazy.’ It was overwhelming and everything happened so fast. I was just waiting for the kick-off, feeling both nervous and excited about playing for Liverpool, my team.”

Blair faced limitations in breaking into Liverpool’s first team because of the depth of talent in the forward positions. He had featured in all three matches during Liverpool’s pre-season tour of America but faced stiff competition.

Now, Blair is set to join Portsmouth at Fratton Park. The club, which has had a mixed start to their Championship campaign, began with a 3-3 draw against Leeds and followed up with a goalless draw against Luton Town.

This move represents a new chapter for Blair, who will look to make his mark in the Championship with Portsmouth.
