Alan Shearer, the legendary Newcastle United striker, has shared his thoughts on working alongside Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on “The Rest is Football” podcast. According to Shearer, the experience is so enjoyable that it doesn’t feel like work at all.
The podcast, which launched last August, quickly became one of the most popular football shows, drawing in a loyal audience. Its success was especially evident during Euro 2024 when Shearer, Lineker, and Richards delivered daily episodes as England made their journey to the tournament’s final. Although the Three Lions fell 2-1 to Spain in Gareth Southgate’s final-match as England manager, the podcast’s popularity only grew.
Speaking exclusively about his experience, Shearer, who recently partnered with Guinness ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, revealed how much fun he has creating the podcast. “We have such a good crack that it’s not work,” said the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer. “We can have a laugh and say what we want, within reason. I think we got the balance right. I don’t think we said anything different from what anyone else in pubs across England was saying.”
Shearer noted that the relaxed, pub-like atmosphere of the show resonates with listeners. “The feedback I got from a lot of people, especially my friends back in Newcastle, was positive. It feels like the three of us are just in a pub having a pint of Guinness, sharing a laugh, telling funny stories, and giving our insights into football,” he added.

However, during Euro 2024, both Shearer and Lineker faced criticism for their candid analysis of England’s performances. Particularly when Lineker famously labeled the team’s effort in a 1-1 draw against Denmark as “s***.”
Despite the backlash, Shearer stands by their commentary. “It’s like picking an England team,” he explained. “If you ask a thousand people, you’ll get 900 different opinions, and that’s okay. As long as you don’t cross the line, it’s fine—and I don’t think we did.”
In addition to his podcast work, Shearer has also teamed up with Guinness for a unique campaign ahead of the new Premier League season. An iconic fleet of 20 Guinness tankers, each wearing the colors of a Premier League club. Will depart from Dublin to deliver perfect pints to fans in time for the first match.
For Shearer, whether it’s podcasting or partnering with iconic brands like Guinness, key is enjoying what you do—and for him. That’s exactly what “The Rest is Football” is all about.
