Trescothick Unsure About Applying for England White-Ball Head Coach Role

Marcus Trescothick will step in as England’s interim head coach for their T20I and ODI series against Australia next month. While he steps in temporarily, Trescothick has yet to decide if he wants to be a long-term candidate for the white-ball head coach role. Currently an assistant coach with England, Trescothick is working with the Test team in Sri Lanka and will join the white-ball squad in Southampton after the third Test at The Oval.

Trescothick Unsure About Applying for England White-Ball Head Coach Role

Trescothick, who has no previous experience as a head coach, expressed his excitement about the interim opportunity but remains focused on his current role. “It’s not something I’d ever thought about before,” he said, adding that he hasn’t made any long-term plans. He highlighted the busy schedule ahead, with upcoming tours to Pakistan and New Zealand, and noted the challenge of balancing both roles.

Trescothick will be involved in squad selection, working closely with Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball captain, whom he knows well from their time at Somerset. The T20I series against Australia begins shortly after the final Test against Sri Lanka, requiring separate squads. While the ECB has not yet advertised the vacant head coach position, Trescothick could emerge as a strong contender if England performs well. Meanwhile, other candidates like Kumar Sangakkara and Andrew Flintoff are also in the mix.
