Match of the Day will showcase several new faces this season following the departure of Ian Wright, who had been a staple of the show for over two decades.
Wright, the Arsenal legend and much-loved pundit, made the decision to leave the show at the end of last season. At 60, he cited the demands of traveling from his London home to the Manchester studio as a key factor in his departure.
In his place, the BBC has introduced a trio of fresh pundits. The lineup has added former England internationals Joe Hart and Theo Walcott. Hart, who recently concluded his career with a domestic double at Celtic, joined BBC’s Euro 2024 coverage in Germany. Walcott, who retired a year ago, made his punditry debut with Sky last season before transitioning to the BBC.
The third addition, Steph Houghton, brings her experience as a centurion for the Lionesses to the table. Like Hart, she retired from professional football at the end of the 2023/24 season. These new analysts will contribute across BBC Sport’s TV, radio, and online platforms, including Match of the Day.
Despite these changes, familiar faces will remain. Gary Lineker will continue to join regulars Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Danny Murphy, Jermaine Jenas, and Martin Keown as the host. Match of the Day 2 will also feature Dion Dublin, Shay Given, Stephen Warnock, Leon Osman, Ashley Williams, Fara Williams, and Glenn Murray, alongside presenter Mark Chapman.
The new lineup was announced at an event hosted by MOTD legend Des Lynam. Lynam suggested that Micah Richards could be the natural successor to Wright, praising his football knowledge and sense of humor. However, he also noted that Richards might struggle to fully match Wright’s legacy.
Lineker and Shearer humorously teased Richards on the Rest is Football podcast about balancing his weekend duties. As he won’t appear on the season’s opening episode due to his commitments with Sky’s Super Sunday.
