Erik ten Hag believes that Joshua Zirkzee has even more to offer Manchester United, despite the striker’s match-winning debut against Fulham. Zirkzee, who joined from Bologna for £36 million this summer, made an immediate impact by scoring the decisive goal in United’s 1-0 victory on Friday night, sealing a positive start to the Premier League season.
The 23-year-old entered the game in the 61st minute and quickly made his presence felt, converting Alejandro Garnacho’s cross in the 87th minute to secure the win. United had struggled to find a breakthrough before Zirkzee’s arrival, with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount both denied by Fulham’s Bernd Leno.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Ten Hag praised Zirkzee’s contribution but emphasized that there is room for improvement. “Scoring is crucial for any striker, and Joshua was in the right place at the right time to finish,” Ten Hag said. “But he has other qualities that we need to develop. He has to find the right balance between being a finisher and linking up play, which is something we’re working on with him.”
Ten Hag also pointed out the importance of substitutes, noting that Zirkzee’s impact highlights the depth and readiness of the squad. “Subs are always important, and it’s great to see a substitute come on and score the winner in the first game. “It shows how vital it is for everyone to prepare,” he added.
