Israel Adesanya and Dricus du Plessis Engage in Fiery Clash at UFC 305 Press Conference

The UFC 305 fight week took a dramatic turn at Friday’s press conference in Perth, Australia, as a tearful and enraged Israel Adesanya clashed with Dricus du Plessis. The heated exchange, which centered on their rivalry over what defines true African champion, marked significant escalation in their feud.

The confrontation began when du Plessis questioned Adesanya about whether he would take the UFC belt back to Africa if he won, referencing a 2020 ESPN feature where Adesanya discussed his childhood experiences with domestic help.

“Are you taking the servants with you when you go back [to Africa with the belt]?” du Plessis asked.

Adesanya responded sharply, “What the f*ck are you even on about?” This led to an escalating argument. With du Plessis dismissing Adesanya’s personal story and Adesanya defending his background passionately.

Adesanya shared, “My father and I had to wake up at 4 a.m. to clean the banks while my mom studied to become a nurse,” his voice breaking with emotion. “You don’t know my fcking story. Don’t fcking speak on my story if you don’t know my story. I will show you who you are Sunday, so right now shut the f*ck up.”

The animosity between the two fighters has been simmering since du Plessis declared in March 2023 that he wanted to be the first true African UFC champion, citing his ongoing residence and training in Africa. This claim provoked a strong response from Adesanya. Who felt du Plessis was undermining the achievements of African-born champions who found success abroad.

The confrontation reached a peak when Adesanya, visibly emotional, vowed to defeat du Plessis: “I’m going to fcking kill your dreams, bitch. I’m going to fcking kill your dreams.”

Du Plessis, who won the UFC middleweight title in January with a split decision over Sean Strickland. Responded by emphasizing his motivation and readiness for the fight. He noted, “I’m motivated by greatness. I’m not motivated by some person. If he doesn’t step in, I’ll be the same motivated fighter that steps in there.”

As UFC 305 approaches, the odds have shifted, with du Plessis initially opening as an underdog but the betting lines narrowing as the fight draws near.

The clash will take place on August 18 at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. For now, the fiery exchanges between Adesanya and du Plessis have set the stage for a highly anticipated bout.
