Andre Russell comments on West Indies Test cricket and suggests that the issue is not financial. According to Russell, premier West Indian cricketers are “just not interested in playing Tests.”

The problem has persisted for years, with cricketers popular in T20 leagues around the world, like Russell, often staying away from West Indies cricket, particularly the longest format. Some have been labeled mercenaries. Recently, in December 2023, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, and Kyle Mayers turned down West Indies central contracts but remained available for T20Is. However, Holder has since returned to Test cricket.
Despite observers attributing the issue to a lack of money in West Indies cricket, Russell disagrees. “I don’t think money is the issue,” he told Press Association. “Given the number of T20 leagues around the world, I believe many players simply aren’t interested in playing Tests.”
Russell made his remarks after the West Indies vs South Africa Test series. The West Indies, currently at the bottom of the World Test Championship table, lost 3-0 to England and then drew the first Test in Port of Spain.
During the last Test series against England, Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Pooran, Rovman Powell, and Kieron Pollard were all involved in The Hundred. Pollard, Powell, and Pooran have never played Test cricket, while Russell played one Test in 2010. Hetmyer has played 16 Tests, the last of which was in 2019.
Russell, now 36, has managed to stay at the top of his game in short-format cricket despite several injuries. “Red-ball cricket is not my cookie; I don’t think my body will keep up with Test cricket,” he said. Nevertheless, he believes younger players will seize opportunities in Test cricket when they arise.
