Australian cricket star Steve Smith is set to return to his preferred number 4 batting position for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 against India. After a series of disappointing performances at the top of the order, Smith is eager to reclaim the spot where he has consistently excelled throughout his career.

After David Warner’s retirement last year, Steve Smith, widely regarded as one of the greatest Test batters of his generation, moved up to open alongside Usman Khawaja. However, the move has not yielded the desired results. In four matches as an opener, Smith managed to score only 171 runs at an average of 28.50, with his highest score being 91* against the West Indies.
Due to Smith’s struggles at the top, discussions have now emerged about his return to the number 4 position, where his record is exceptional. In fact, over 67 matches batting at number 4, Smith has amassed 5966 runs at an impressive average of 61.50, including 19 centuries. Therefore, his return to this spot could be a significant boost for Australia as they prepare to face India in the highly anticipated Australia vs India Test series.
If Smith does move back to number 4, it’s likely that Mitch Marsh will take over the opening duties. The much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, part of the World Test Championship 2024 cycle, kicks off on November 22.
