What if you could travel back in time? For Brazil’s Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Eduarda “Duda” Santos Lisboa, winning an Olympic gold medal in Paris 2024 felt like doing just that.
A decade after claiming gold together at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing 2014, Ana Patricia and Duda once again stood atop the podium, reliving the golden memories—but this time, with an even stronger bond. The duo triumphed late on August 9, defeating Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson in a thrilling three-set final to secure Olympic gold.
“It’s surreal,” Ana Patricia reflected, “We’ve been reminiscing about Nanjing every day. That final was against Canada, and so was this one. It feels like destiny.”
The journey from teen champions to Olympic gold medallists wasn’t without its challenges. After their success in Nanjing, Ana Patricia and Duda parted ways in 2015 to form new partnerships. Both found success on the international stage, but their Tokyo 2020 campaigns ended in heartbreak. With Brazil failing to medal in beach volleyball for the first time since the sport’s Olympic debut in 1996.
Their reunion in 2022 reignited hopes for Brazil’s return to beach volleyball glory. Ranked as the world’s No. 1 pair, reigning Pan American and world champions. The pressure was immense as they arrived in Paris. But Ana Patricia and Duda thrived under the weight of expectations, dominating their matches up to the quarter-finals without losing a set.
Their toughest test came in the semi-finals against Australia’s Tokyo 2020 silver medallists, Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy. After dropping the first set, the Brazilians rallied to win, securing their place in the final. Overcome with emotion, Duda dedicated the victory to her late grandmother, who she dreamed of the night before the match.
In the gold medal match, the Canadians pushed the Brazilians to the limit, forcing a tie-break after splitting the first-two-sets. As tensions mounted, the stadium echoed with chants of “Vai Brasil!” while John Lennon’s “Imagine” played, momentarily easing the intensity. The Brazilians seized the momentum, winning the tie-break 15-10 and with it, Olympic gold.
“I used to consider Tokyo a big trauma,” Ana Patricia shared, reflecting on her past struggles. “But I needed to go through that to grow. Today’s victory wouldn’t have happened without those experiences.”
For Duda, the win was the culmination of years of dedication and a little bit of birthday magic—she had celebrated her birthday in Paris three years in a row, with 2024’s victory being the sweetest.
As the Brazilian anthem echoed across the Eiffel Tower Stadium, Ana Patricia and Duda’s decade-long journey from Youth Olympic champions to Olympic gold medalists was finally complete. Their story is one of resilience, friendship, and, ultimately, the power of believing in destiny.
