Carrying the hopes of his nation, Vaast showcased his skills at Teahupo’o, the iconic surf spot that hosted the Games.
In the final against Australia’s Jack Robinson, Vaast faced challenging conditions but remained composed. He quickly impressed with a near-perfect 9.5 score, riding an exceptional open-faced barrel that earned cheers from the crowd. Subsequently, his second score of 8.0 secured his victory and marked the beginning of a new chapter as an Olympic gold medalist.
Vaast expressed his deep connection with the ocean and his gratitude to the island community. “Winning the Olympics at home, on the best wave in the world, is something truly special,” he told Olympics.com.
