British 800m medal hopeful Jake Wightman has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics 2024 due to a hamstring injury. The 30-year-old, who won the 1500m world championship title in 2022, will have Elliot Giles as his replacement.

Wightman secured a silver medal in the 800m at the 2022 European Championships but has struggled with injuries since. A foot problem prevented him from defending his world title in Budapest in 2023, and a calf issue caused him to miss the UK Championships 2023.
Despite these setbacks, Wightman remained optimistic about his Olympic chances, stating that injuries would not hinder his ability to win a medal. “You don’t lose the qualities you had,” he said. “If you’re not out there performing and showing what qualities you have, people forget about it. It’s a nicer thing for me to be able to come in under the radar and not have this pressure of everyone expecting me to go out and win or be the best in the world.”
Elliot Giles, also 30, will now join Max Burgin and Ben Pattison as Britain’s representatives in the 800m heats Olympics on Wednesday. The final is scheduled for August 10.
Wightman’s withdrawal is a significant blow for the British athletics team, but Giles’ inclusion provides an opportunity for another talented athlete to compete on the world stage.
