Martin’s impressive career includes being the inaugural Olympic BMX Freestyle champion, a two-time world champion, and a five-time X Games gold medalist. Despite achieving almost everything possible in the sport, Martin remains driven by his passion and desire to excel.
“I enjoy winning, but what truly motivates me is the daily grind and the goal of winning contests,” Martin told Olympics.com during the Olympic Qualifier Series in Shanghai. “BMX Freestyle is both my career and my hobby. I’m immersed in it all the time.”

“Coming into my 30s, I recognize that my body can’t handle the same intensity as before,” Martin admitted. “However, I feel stronger and more skilled than ever. My focus is on mental strength and staying positive, even when facing the inherent risks of the sport.”
A Home Advantage
Martin’s commitment to excellence includes his unique approach to training. Ahead of Tokyo 2020, he built a custom BMX park in his backyard, which proved invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic. This setup allowed him to maintain a high level of training without interruption.
“When BMX Freestyle became an Olympic sport, I knew the level would rise quickly,” Martin said. “I built the park to avoid relocating my family and to maximize my time on the bike. The timing was perfect as it allowed me to train consistently during the pandemic and ultimately win gold in Tokyo.”
Family and Legacy
The backyard BMX park has also provided Martin with precious moments with his family. It allows him to spend more time with his children and involve them in his passion for BMX Freestyle. Martin hopes to impart valuable life lessons through his dedication and consistency.
“I want my kids to see that with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals,” Martin said. “Consistency is key in achieving greatness, and I aim to show them that through my actions.”
