The last round of the 2024 MotoGP season before the summer break was pivotal, as reigning champion Pecco Bagnaia overtook early leader Jorge Martin in the standings. Martin’s crash during the German Grand Prix, just two laps from the finish, allowed Bagnaia to take the lead. With Martin’s move to Aprilia in 2025, this incident may mark a turning point in the season, potentially signaling the end of Martin’s title hopes.
While it might seem premature to make such a claim with the MotoGP season only at its halfway mark and just a 10-point gap in Bagnaia’s favor, there are several reasons to suggest that Martin’s title aspirations are already dwindling.
Development Freeze

One major issue for Martin is the likely freeze in the development of his Pramac bike by Ducati. It’s standard practice for factories to limit support to riders who are switching teams, especially when a team like Pramac is also preparing for a transition to Yamaha. While Martin will continue to receive factory support, including data-sharing and engineering resources, significant technical updates may cease. This could lead to Martin falling behind Bagnaia, as Ducati shifts focus to future factory rider Marc Marquez and their preparation for the next season.
Frosty Atmosphere
Tensions have risen within the Pramac garage following Martin’s decision to leave Ducati for Aprilia. Martin felt rejected by Ducati after they prioritized Marquez over him for 2025, leading to a rapid decision to switch teams. This frosty atmosphere might impact performance, as strained relationships could result in slower support, even if only subconsciously.
Ducati’s Track Strategy

While it’s unlikely Ducati will issue direct team orders, the dynamics on the track could subtly shift. Riders like Marquez or current factory racer Enea Bastianini might not be asked to ease off if they find themselves competing against Martin, whereas they might receive such instructions if they’re battling Bagnaia. This could further hinder Martin’s title bid.
Favorable Calendar for Bagnaia
External factors also play a role. Misano, a circuit where Bagnaia has historically performed well, will feature twice on the 2024 calendar, replacing the canceled Kazakhstani round. This change could be detrimental to Martin’s chances.
All these factors align with Ducati’s interests, as the manufacturer would prefer the championship title to remain with a Ducati rider rather than see the number one plate on an Aprilia bike next season. Ensuring Bagnaia retains his championship is the most effective way for Ducati to achieve this goal.
