Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down from his role as captain of Sri Lanka’s T20I team following the team’s early exit in the T20 World Cup 2024 group stage, despite his promising performance in the Lanka Premier League. His resignation marks the second high-profile departure after head coach Chris Silverwood also resigned post-World Cup disappointment. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has appointed Sanath Jayasuriya as interim coach until the upcoming England series.
In his resignation statement, Wanindu Hasaranga expressed his efforts and dedication to the team, acknowledging that his best wasn’t enough. Despite stepping down, he pledged ongoing support to the team and its leadership. Having led in only 10 T20Is, his decision may reflect future career plans, particularly given his earlier retirement from Test cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has yet to announce Wanindu Hasaranga’s successor, although speculations favor Kusal Mendis or Charith Asalanka. Mendis led during the ODI World Cup, while Asalanka has previously captained in Hasaranga’s absence. The team’s upcoming series against India includes a three-match T20I series starting from July 26, followed by a three-match ODI series.
