Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella has emerged as one of Spain’s standout players at UEFA EURO 2024. Speaking with EURO2024.com, he shared insights on his partnership with Nico Williams, the upcoming semi-final against France, and comparisons to Carles Puyol.
Initially, many expected 16-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal to be Spain’s breakout star, given his precocious talent and early international debut. However, it is the 25-year-old Cucurella, with his Puyol-esque hairstyle and determined playing style, who has captured attention. Before this tournament, Cucurella had not played in a senior competitive match for Spain. An injury to Valencia’s José Gayà paved the way for him to become Luis de la Fuente’s first-choice left-back, bringing Spain two wins away from their fourth EURO title.
Reflecting on Spain’s dramatic extra-time victory against Germany in the quarter-finals, Cucurella described the mix of exhaustion and joy. “We were tired! But there was pure joy at reaching the semi-finals and being two matches away from winning the trophy,” he said.
Cucurella also elaborated on his successful partnership with Nico Williams on Spain’s left flank. “We had an immediate connection,” he explained. “Nico’s a happy-go-lucky guy and so am I, so our personalities clicked – it’s happened without us trying. During matches, I tell him to do as he pleases because, with these top players who have bags of talent, it’s important that they feel at ease.”
As Spain prepares to face France, Cucurella knows the formidable challenge posed by Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola. He recalled his previous encounter with Mbappé during an Under-19 match in 2016. “He’s one of those players who might not seem involved in a move but ends up making the difference. It will be difficult, but we are a strong, solid team. If we work together, we can defeat France.”
Regarding comparisons to Carles Puyol, Cucurella expressed his admiration for the legendary defender. “Carles is a legend and something we have in common is always giving everything for the team. He knew his strengths and weaknesses very well, and the team was always most important for him. That’s one of my characteristics too. I’m glad people make this comparison – he was a great player who made history. Hopefully, I end up having had a similar career.”
Looking ahead, Cucurella hopes to extend his summer holidays by a few days. “On the 15th!” he responded when asked if his break would start on July 10 or July 15. “It’s been a difficult season as this tournament has been a long time far away from our families. But if we end it by winning the EURO, it would be beautiful and would make many people happy.”
As Spain gears up for their semi-final clash, Cucurella’s contributions and leadership will be crucial in their quest for glory.
