Manchester United Appoint Dan Ashworth as New Sporting Director

Manchester United have reached an agreement to hire Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director, with the 53-year-old set to start his role at Old Trafford immediately.

Newcastle initially demanded £20 million in compensation for their former FA Technical Director, while United aimed to pay significantly less. However, a compromise was reached in recent days. Which also helped Newcastle meet the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) requirements this month. Ashworth has been on gardening leave from Newcastle since February.

This hiring is the latest in a series of strategic appointments made by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the new INEOS minority investors since they took over the club. Omar Berrada, formerly of Manchester City, has been appointed as United’s new chief executive, and Jason Wilcox joined as the new academy director from Southampton.

Why Dan Ashworth?

“It’s unsurprising that Man Utd have chosen him to take over as sporting director under INEOS, who are looking to reshape their football operations,” noted a football analyst.

“Ashworth’s pedigree and esteem are well-known in the game. He is widely regarded as one of the best operators in Europe and arguably the best in England given his body of work.”

His impressive career includes successful stints at West Brom, where he delivered two promotions and a top-half Premier League finish. This success led to his recruitment by the England FA. Where he introduced the England DNA – a defined playing style across all age groups. Which significantly contributed to the national team’s success, notably at the 2018 World Cup.

Ashworth
