“I’m proud to represent my Jamaican roots” – Steven Taylor on facing West Indies in Super 8 clash

USA opener Steven Taylor is gearing up to face the West Indies team in the Super Eight stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, a team he grew up admiring. Born in Florida to Jamaican parents, Taylor’s background adds an intriguing narrative to this important clash at Kensington Oval, Barbados.

The USA team, considered underdogs in the Super Eights, faces a pivotal game against the two-time champions. Taylor’s connection to both teams adds an emotional touch to what promises to be a gripping cricket match.

“I’m proud to represent my parents and my Jamaican heritage. Even though I was born American, I often feel more Jamaican than American. I used to sing the song ‘Rally’ growing up, but ultimately, I’m representing my true homeland where I was raised. I hope we can come out on top against West Indies,” he shared with ESPNcricinfo.

Taylor reminisced about his admiration for West Indies legends Brian Lara and Chris Gayle while growing up, expressing confidence in his team’s ability to defeat the hosts in their upcoming match.

“I grew up watching heroes like Lara and Gayle. Now, to have the opportunity to play against West Indies on the World Cup stage, it’s a dream come true. It would be an incredible feeling to beat them,” Taylor added.

The match holds personal significance for Taylor, who has previously represented Jamaica and various Caribbean Premier League franchises. He eagerly anticipates facing former teammates, including close friend Akeal Hosein.

“He’s a good friend and I know his game well. I’ll be ready to challenge him right from the first ball,” Taylor emphasized.

Despite entering the match as underdogs, Taylor remains optimistic about USA’s chances, recalling their competitive showing against West Indies in a previous World Cup qualifier.

“We fought hard last time, and we know if we play our best cricket, we have a chance. We’re a united team playing well together. We understand we’re underdogs, but we’re here to compete and give it our all,” Taylor concluded.
