Phil Salt Reflects on His Impactful Batting Against West Indies in T20 World Cup

England began their Super 8 campaign with a dominant 8-wicket victory over two-time champions West Indies. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Jos Buttler’s decision was justified by a disciplined performance from England’s bowlers, particularly the spinners, restricting West Indies to 180/4 in 20 overs.

Opening batsmen Phil Salt and Jos Buttler provided England with a strong start, forging a 67-run partnership. Jonny Bairstow, batting at number 4, played a pivotal role with an unbeaten 48 off 26 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes.

The highlight of the match was Phil Salt’s explosive innings. He smashed 7 boundaries in a single over, comprising 4 fours and 3 sixes off Romario Shepherd’s bowling in the 16th over, finishing unbeaten on 87 off 47 deliveries to steer England to a comprehensive victory.

Salt, rightfully awarded the man of the match, expressed his satisfaction in contributing to the team’s success. He acknowledged the challenge posed by West Indies’ spinners but emphasized the importance of constructing the chase effectively.

“It feels great to contribute to the team’s win. It was challenging facing the spin in the middle overs. Constructing the chase was key. If I didn’t attack the spinners, I had to take on the pacers later. The pitch played well overall,” said Phil Salt.

Despite Roston Chase’s effective spell for West Indies, claiming Buttler’s wicket and conceding just 19 runs in 3 overs, England managed to maintain control and comfortably achieve their target.

Left-arm spinners Gudakesh Motie (0/32) and Akeal Hosein (0/35) faced a tough task containing England’s batters as they cruised to victory.
