Who Could Replace Marc Marquez at Gresini?

With Marc Marquez set to join the factory Ducati team in 2025, Gresini Racing now finds itself in need of a new rider. Although Alex Marquez’s contract is also up, there’s little indication he will leave. The allure of a year-old Desmosedici bike has several riders eyeing the vacant spot.

Joan Mir

Joan Mir, Marquez’s former teammate at Repsol Honda, is a prime candidate. Since Suzuki exited MotoGP, Mir has struggled at Honda, enduring crashes and considering retirement. His contract is ending, and his recent form has diminished his market value. However, Gresini’s ability to revitalize careers, as seen with both Marquez brothers, makes it an attractive option for Mir to rejuvenate his racing passion.

Franco Morbidelli

Franco Morbidelli’s future with Pramac is uncertain, especially with Jorge Martin moving to Aprilia. Morbidelli, whose GP24 preseason was marred by injury, left Yamaha amidst speculation. If Pramac opts for new riders or switches to Yamaha, Morbidelli might need a fresh start. Gresini could offer a less pressurized environment for him to demonstrate his capabilities.

Alex Rins

Alex Rins, currently contracted with Yamaha, has a history with Japanese bikes but might seek more competitive machinery. His standout moment was a win in Texas, a rare Honda victory since 2018. Gresini, aiming to remain competitive, could benefit from Rins’ experience and five MotoGP wins, despite his recent challenges and a significant injury.

Augusto Fernandez

With Tech3 KTM confirming Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales for 2025, Augusto Fernandez is now without a team. Despite being overshadowed by teammate Pedro Acosta, Fernandez was renewed last year over Pol Espargaro. The 2022 Moto2 champion still holds potential and could find a supportive environment at Gresini to revive his MotoGP prospects.

Fermin Aldeguer

Moto2’s Fermin Aldeguer has a Ducati contract but no designated team yet, with Pramac’s future uncertain. Joining Gresini could provide an ideal entry into MotoGP, especially under the mentorship of Alex Marquez. A year with Gresini might position Aldeguer well for future opportunities within Ducati.

Gresini Racing has several strong contenders to fill Marc Marquez’s shoes, each with the potential to bring unique strengths and revitalized careers to the team.
