Incoming Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca finds himself under immediate pressure to reshape the squad, with calls to axe two expensive central defenders – Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi.
Maresca, who signed a five-year contract with the option for an additional year, will officially take the reins next month. However, speculation regarding potential transfers is already swirling.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel believes the club should cut ties with Badiashile and Disasi, who cost a combined £70 million. “We need proven, two top centre-backs,” declared Mikel on his podcast. He emphasized the need for experienced defenders to solidify the back four.
Both Badiashile and Disasi, young French defenders, arrived from Monaco for hefty price tags. Badiashile (£38 million) has seen more playing time with 44 appearances last season, while Disasi’s opportunities have been limited (33 appearances). Their contracts, however, suggest they are part of the club’s long-term plans (Disasi until 2029, Badiashile until 2028).

Despite having Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, and Alfie Gilchrist as options at center-back, Chelsea seems intent on defensive reinforcements. The Blues reportedly attempted to hijack Newcastle’s move for Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo, who recently confirmed his departure from the club.
Looking beyond central defense, there are also rumors that Chelsea is considering a renewed move for Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise and monitoring Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Maresca’s first task as Chelsea manager appears to be a significant squad overhaul, with a focus on proven talent in defense and potentially bolstering the attack. The decisions regarding Badiashile and Disasi, however, might prove a challenge considering their hefty price tags and Chelsea’s long-term investment.
