Following the announcement of Raphael Varane’s departure from Manchester United, former Northern Ireland teammate Stuart Dallas has advocated for the Red Devils to extend Jonny Evans’ contract.
United recently confirmed that Varane, having declined to activate a one-year extension in his contract, would be leaving the club as a free agent this summer. With Varane’s exit, United faces a gap in their defensive lineup, prompting discussions about potential replacements.
One such candidate, according to Dallas, is Evans, whose contract with United is also set to expire. Dallas, emphasizing Evans’ consistent performances and leadership qualities, believes the defender has proven himself worthy of a new deal.
Reflecting on Evans’ contributions, Dallas expressed to The Belfast Telegraph: “Jonny has probably surprised himself at how often he has played this year. But it’s not just that he has played, he has performed as Manchester United’s best defender.
Dallas further highlighted Evans’ enduring quality and experience, asserting that his presence has been invaluable to United’s defensive stability throughout the season.
Evans, who signed a one-year contract last summer, has made 28 appearances across all competitions for United. Despite his significant contributions, uncertainty looms over his future with the club, particularly amid speculations about the potential sales of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.
In light of United’s defensive reshuffle, several names have surfaced as potential transfer targets. There have been links between Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo with moves to Old Trafford, while Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo, nearing the end of his contract, has also attracted interest.
