Michael Hussey, the batting coach of Chennai Super Kings, expressed optimism about the possibility of Mahendra Singh Dhoni continuing to play for the team for a couple more years. Despite Dhoni’s surprise decision to step aside as captain just before the start of the 2024 season, Hussey believes Dhoni still has a lot to offer, especially with his exceptional batting form.
Speaking on ESPN’s Around the Wicket show, Hussey highlighted Dhoni’s continued excellence with the bat and his dedication to preparation. He emphasized the importance of managing Dhoni’s workload, particularly considering his previous knee surgery, but praised Dhoni’s ability to make impactful contributions, even when batting lower down the order.
Regarding Dhoni’s adjusted role and workload management, Hussey acknowledged the necessity of these measures, given Dhoni’s recent knee surgery. Despite batting lower in the order, Dhoni’s ability to make an immediate impact with his clean hitting from the outset has been commendable.
Reflecting on Dhoni’s transition from captaincy to mentorship under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership, Hussey described the initial surprise at Dhoni’s decision but praised the smooth management of the transition. He noted Dhoni’s willingness to support Gaikwad and mentor him through the process, highlighting the positive impact it has had on the team’s dynamics.
Under Gaikwad’s captaincy, CSK has performed well, currently occupying the third position on the points table and poised for a playoff spot. Hussey commended Gaikwad’s calm and measured approach on the field and expressed confidence in his continued growth as a leader.
In summary, Hussey’s comments reflect a sense of optimism about Dhoni’s potential to continue contributing to CSK’s success for the foreseeable future, both as a player and a mentor to the team’s emerging talents.
