Former England striker Ellen White expressed her bewilderment at Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor’s decision not to utilize defender Steph Houghton in her farewell home match, attributing it to City’s subsequent loss to Arsenal, which effectively dashed their hopes of winning the league.
In a crucial fixture against Arsenal, Manchester City needed a positive result to maintain their position as title contenders in the Women’s Super League. The match held added significance as it marked Houghton’s final home appearance for City after a distinguished 10-year tenure with nearly 250 appearances for the club.
Despite taking the lead through Lauren Hemp’s goal, City faltered in the second half, succumbing to a spirited Arsenal comeback within a span of four minutes. White, a former City striker, expressed surprise at Taylor’s decision to introduce Alanna Kennedy instead of Houghton, especially after full-back Kerstin Casparij’s injury left City vulnerable defensively.
White emphasized the importance of Houghton’s experience, leadership, and game management skills, suggesting that her presence on the pitch could have helped City secure a crucial result.
She highlighted the significance of Houghton’s potential impact in organizing the defense, supporting the team strategically, and managing game situations effectively.

Following Casparij’s departure from the field, City struggled to cope with Arsenal’s attacking pressure, conceding two quick goals that ultimately decided the outcome of the match. White lamented the missed opportunity to utilize Houghton’s expertise in stabilizing City’s defense and managing the game’s closing stages.
Despite the disappointment of not featuring in her final home game, Houghton’s contributions to Manchester City and women’s football were acknowledged through a presentation and guard of honor after the match.
Reflecting on the recognition, Houghton expressed gratitude for the heartfelt tribute from the club and her teammates, emphasizing the special significance of the occasion in her illustrious career.
Houghton’s remarkable career spans two decades and includes successful spells at various clubs, with her invaluable contributions earning her numerous domestic trophies and widespread admiration within the football community.
