Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma took a cautious approach in the recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders due to experiencing “mild back stiffness,” as revealed by teammate Piyush Chawla during the post match press conference.
Chawla emphasized that the decision for Rohit to play as an Impact Player was purely precautionary, indicating the team’s priority towards the captains well-being.
Despite Rohit’s limited contribution of 11 runs off 12 balls, Mumbai Indians faced a setback in their chase of 170 runs on the challenging Wankhede pitch. The defeat marked their eighth loss in 11 games, leaving them in ninth position and with slim hopes for playoffs.
When questioned about the team’s remaining motivation, Chawla emphasized playing for pride and reputation. He highlighted the importance of upholding the team’s name regardless of the playoff scenario, reflecting the team’s resilient spirit.
Meanwhile, amidst the match’s challenges, Chawla achieved a personal mile stone by becoming the second-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, surpassing Dwayne Bravo’s tally of 183 wickets. His dismissal of Rinku Singh with the first ball of the match contributed to this accomplishment.
Reflecting on his journey, Chawla expressed gratitude for the evolution of spinners’ roles in the IPL over the past 17 years. He noted the increasing prominence of spinners among the top wicket takers, including himself, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Yuzvendra Chahal, under scoring the satisfaction derived from this progress.
