Zaheer Khan says Impact Player rule favors half all-rounders, not complete ones

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has ignited a debate by recently criticizing the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He suggests it hinders the development of well-rounded players who can contribute with both bat and ball, a crucial factor for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Zaheer Khan’s Echoing Concerns: Impact on All-Rounders

Zaheer Khan says Impact Player rule favors half all-rounders, not complete ones

Former cricketer Zaheer Khan echoed Rohit Sharma’s concerns, highlighting the limited opportunities for players like Venkatesh Iyer and Shivam Dube to showcase their bowling skills in IPL 2024. With Iyer bowling just one over and Dube not bowling at all, concerns are rising about the ability to identify and nurture complete all-rounders under the current format.

“In the Impact Player rule, you will find half all-rounders but not a complete one,” Zaheer Khan remarked in a conversation with JioCinema. This sentiment highlights the possible detrimental effect on players who primarily rely on their batting prowess while neglecting their bowling skills’ development.

Despite these concerns, Zaheer Khan remains optimistic about certain players’ prospects for the T20 World Cup. He has specifically backed Mohammed Siraj to partner with Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian pace attack. While Siraj has faced recent struggles, Zaheer believes he has the potential to bounce back and contribute significantly in the T20 format.

Arshdeep Singh, a young pacer from Punjab Kings, has also emerged as a serious contender for the national squad, according to Zaheer Khan. Other names to watch include Khaleel Ahmed, Mohsin Khan, and Yash Dayal. With the T20 World Cup team selection just around the corner, these players will be closely monitored for their performances.

“While team selection is still two weeks away, Arshdeep is a serious hopeful, and the selectors are looking at him,” Zaheer concluded. This upcoming selection will be crucial in determining India’s bowling attack for the T20 World Cup, with both the Impact Player rule and individual player performance playing significant roles in the final decisions.
