After spearheading the Mumbai Indians (MI) to a thrilling victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS), pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah shed light on the complexities bowlers face in the modern T20 format, particularly with the introduction of the impact player rule.
Bumrah Claims the Purple Cap

Bumrah’s fiery spell dismantled the PBKS batting line-up, claiming a vital three wickets while conceding only 21 runs in his four overs. His dominance began with the dismissal of the dangerous Rilee Rossouw, uprooting his middle stump with a perfectly executed yorker, setting the tone for a disciplined bowling performance by MI.
Bumrah continued his rampage by dismissing PBKS skipper Sam Curran and the in-form batter Shashank Singh, further derailing the opposition’s chase.
This exceptional performance propelled Bumrah to the of the bowling charts in IPL 2024, earning him the coveted Purple Cap with a tally of 13 wickets at an outstanding average of 7.84.
In his post-match interview, Bumrah offered valuable insights into the challenges faced by bowlers in the fast-paced T20 arena. He highlighted the limited time available and the impact player rule, which allows teams to introduce a specialist batsman later in the innings, often leading to deeper and more potent batting lineups. Despite these hurdles, Bumrah emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and minimizing excessive communication during high-pressure situations on the field.
Earlier in the match, MI opted to bat first, but faced an early setback with the dismissal of opener Ishan Kishan. However, seasoned campaigners Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav stitched together a crucial 81-run partnership for the second wicket, providing much-needed stability to the innings.
Yadav continued his impressive form by combining with the young talent Tilak Varma for a significant 49-run stand for the third wicket. Later contributions from Tim David and skipper Hardik Pandya propelled MI to a competitive total of 192/7.
PBKS’ Spirited Fightback: Ashutosh Sharma’s Heroics
While PBKS found themselves in a precarious position at 77/6 during their chase, a blistering 28-ball 61 from the relatively unknown Ashutosh Sharma ignited a glimmer of hope for a comeback. However, MI’s bowlers held their nerve to clinch a hard-fought victory.
