Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has called for a change in the club’s transfer strategy, citing Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool as a model to emulate.
United’s transfer spending has exceeded £1.19 billion more than their income from player sales over the past decade. Despite substantial investments in players like Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, and Jadon Sancho, the club has not achieved the desired success on the field.
Schweinsteiger, who made 35 appearances for United, believes the club should adopt Klopp’s approach, which transformed Borussia Dortmund and later Liverpool. He pointed out Klopp’s success in identifying talent like Andy Robertson and others without spending exorbitant amounts.
“Sometimes you spend money completely wrong,” Schweinsteiger stated. “You must adapt to how football is changing or not changing, and the easiest example where [Manchester] United should have learned out of it – just look over there [Liverpool].”
He emphasized Klopp’s success in finding players like Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gotze, and Marco Reus during his time at Dortmund. Schweinsteiger suggested that United could benefit from observing Liverpool’s stable and effective recruitment strategy.
Having spent the majority of his career at Bayern Munich, Schweinsteiger joined United in July 2015. Despite initially being a key player under Louis van Gaal and winning the FA Cup in his debut season, he fell out of favor under Jose Mourinho.
Schweinsteiger revealed his challenging experience under Mourinho, where he was sidelined from the first team and eventually left for Chicago Fire in March 2017. Despite the difficult period, he expressed his fondness for United and his desire to have continued wearing the club’s jersey.
