Sunil Narine’s promotion to the opening position for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in this IPL 2024 season has been a masterstroke. Team mentor Gautam Gambhir deserves credit for this move, according to teammate Rinku Singh.
Narine’s Explosive Performance
Narine’s remarkable success as an opener was highlighted by his maiden T20 hundred, a blistering 56-ball 109 against the Rajasthan Royals. The West Indian’s form at the top of the order has been a revelation, considering his previous struggles batting lower down. In just six games this season, he has already amassed a whopping 276 runs, a significant improvement compared to the mere 154 runs he managed over the past three seasons.
Gambhir’s Role and Narine’s Transformation
Acknowledging Gambhir’s role in Narine’s transformation, Rinku Singh echoed Narine’s sentiments in a post-match interaction. “Narine’s batting transformation has been incredible this season. Opening the batting and scoring consistently was Gambhir’s idea,” stated Rinku.
Narine first opened the batting under Gambhir’s leadership in 2017, where he smashed the fastest fifty in IPL history in just 15 balls. Since then, Narine has displayed his explosive batting potential on multiple occasions, including a 13-ball fifty in the Bangladesh Premier League.
While Narine’s hard work at the nets has undoubtedly been crucial, Rinku Singh observed a notable change in his approach. He’s become more patient and focuses on thoughtful stroke-making.
Regarding Narine’s century in a losing cause against the Rajasthan Royals, Rinku Singh expressed disappointment. However, he emphasized the team’s overall strong performance and credited the Rajasthan Royals, particularly Jos Buttler, for their exceptional display.
With KKR’s top order performing consistently, Rinku Singh, the team’s finisher, has seen limited opportunities. Despite this, he remains focused on contributing whenever required. Although his aggregate score might be modest this season, his healthy strike-rate reflects his intent and readiness to deliver when called upon.
Rinku Singh also mentioned his recent appearance as an Impact Sub, attributing it to a minor niggle, showcasing his commitment to the team’s cause.
