Former Premier League star Troy Deeney is embarking on a new sporting journey. As he prepares to compete in the UK Open Pool Championship after being awarded a wildcard entry.
The tournament, scheduled as part of the World Nineball Tour, will be held at the Telford International Centre from May 7 to May 12. With Deeney set to showcase his skills live on Sky Sports in pursuit of the £24,000 top prize.
Expressing his excitement, Deeney stated, “I am absolutely buzzing to play at the UK Open Pool Championship. I always fancied myself on the table at the training ground with the boys, so when this opportunity came up. I jumped at the chance to put myself to the test against some of the world’s top players and can’t wait to compete on May 7th.”
Emily Frazer, CEO of Matchroom Multi Sport, also shared her enthusiasm, saying. “We’re thrilled to welcome Troy Deeney to the UK Pool Open as a wild card player. His presence will undoubtedly heighten the excitement and competitiveness of this iconic World Nineball Tour event.”

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Deeney highlighted his interest in exploring new sports following his transition out of football, noting pool as an enticing option. He drew parallels between pool and football, emphasizing the importance of precision and strategy in both disciplines.
Deeney’s foray into pool comes after a challenging stint as head coach of League Two side Forest Green Rovers. Where he faced criticism and a string of disappointing results before ultimately parting ways with the club.
Despite the setbacks, Deeney remains determined to make an impact in his new endeavor, showcasing his competitive spirit and adaptability as he ventures into the world of professional pool competition.
