Jordan Henderson’s candid admission about stepping down as Liverpool captain last summer has found support from his close friend and successor, Virgil van Dijk.
Henderson’s departure from Anfield after 12 years, followed by a brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq before joining Ajax in January, coincided with a period of significant changes at the club under Jurgen Klopp. Reflecting on his exit, Henderson acknowledged the necessity of these changes for the club’s progress.
Despite the emotional aspect of leaving, Henderson believes it was the right decision for both him and the club. He praised Klopp’s management and highlighted the positive impact of freshening up the squad’s dynamics, particularly with Virgil van Dijk assuming the captaincy role and Trent Alexander-Arnold as vice-captain.

Van Dijk, while expressing sadness over Henderson’s departure, acknowledges the inevitability of changes in football. He emphasizes the need for players to step up in such situations, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with new roles.
With Van Dijk as captain and Alexander-Arnold as vice-captain, supported by the leadership group including Andy Robertson, Alisson, and Mohamed Salah, there’s a collaborative effort to navigate the team through challenges and decisions. Van Dijk highlights the importance of shared responsibility and praises the team’s collective effort in adapting to new roles and responsibilities.
In essence, both Henderson and Van Dijk recognize the significance of change and leadership transitions in football, emphasizing the importance of collective effort and adaptation for continued success.
