Driven by admiration for the former Mumbai Indians captain, the pitch invader rushed towards Rohit Sharma, surprising him during a crucial phase of the match. Additionally, the fan also embraced wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan before evading security personnel in an attempt to exit the field, highlighting the security challenges faced by such incidents.
This incident marked the second occurrence of fan intrusion within a week in IPL 2024, following a similar event where a fan breached security to approach Virat Kohli during a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings in Bengaluru. When the intrusion occurred, Rohit Sharma stood in the slip cordon as Mumbai Indians began defending a modest total of 125/9 against Rajasthan Royals.
Unfortunately for Rohit Sharma, the day turned less favorable on a personal note as he faced an early dismissal by Trent Boult, returning to the pavilion without scoring. This dismissal resulted in Rohit tying the record for the most ducks in IPL history, previously held by Dinesh Karthik.
