The news of midfielders Riley McGree and Jordan Bos being unavailable for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Lebanon due to injuries sustained in the previous match between the two sides has dealt a blow to Socceroos fans.
Football Australia (FA) confirmed the absence of both players. McGree, who plays for English club Middlesbrough FC, was forced off the field early in the first half with a foot injury. Bos, from Belgian club KVC Westerlo, entered the game as a substitute but unfortunately suffered a knee injury shortly before halftime and couldn’t continue.
Both players underwent scans after the match, and the Socceroos’ medical team is working closely with the medical staff of Middlesbrough and KVC Westerlo to determine the most appropriate treatment plans. The official announcement didn’t specify the duration of their absence. Their respective club doctors will assess them upon return.
This news comes as a setback for the Socceroos, but they will still be looking to maintain their strong position in Group I. Currently, Australia leads the group with nine points after three matches, boasting a comfortable five-point advantage over second-placed Palestine. Lebanon sits at two points, while Bangladesh occupies the bottom spot with just one point.
