Gujarat Titans have witnessed a change in leadership, with taking over the reins from Hardik Pandya as the captain of the franchise. Shubman Gill’s appointment comes after the Titans reached the final in both of their previous two IPL seasons, adding an element of intrigue to their approach this year.
Despite Shubman Gill’s stature as one of the top limited-overs batters globally, and his recent success in Test cricket, he lacks extensive captaincy experience at the highest level. This transition raises questions about how the Titans will navigate their campaign under Shubman Gill’s leadership.
Ashish Nehra, the team’s head coach, expressed his anticipation to observe Gill’s leadership style. “We are all very excited to see how Gill operates,” Nehra remarked, acknowledging the widespread curiosity surrounding Gill’s new role. “He is a player who is dedicated to excelling in all formats of the game. As a franchise, we are eager to support his growth not just as a captain but as an individual. Personal development is key for him to evolve into a better leader.”
Nehra drew parallels with past instances of players assuming leadership roles with limited prior experience. “This isn’t an isolated case. Many players, like Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer, stepped into captaincy roles without extensive prior experience,” Nehra noted. “This presents a valuable learning opportunity for Gill and others. Progressing first as individuals, then as players, is pivotal for their success.”
Despite the additional responsibility of captaincy, Gill remains one of the Titans’ pivotal batters. With a remarkable strike rate and consistent performance over the last two IPL seasons, Gill’s transition to captaincy is seen as a natural progression by the team’s batting coach, Gary Kirsten.

“Leadership is a significant role for Gill, and he is eager to embrace it,” Kirsten affirmed. “Our role as coaches is to ensure he maximizes his potential as a captain while guiding the team effectively. Gill’s determination and motivation are evident, and although he faces challenges as a new leader, we are here to support his journey.”
The Titans face the challenge of compensating for the absence of key players, including Mohammed Shami due to injury. Nehra acknowledged the difficulty of replacing experienced players but expressed confidence in the team’s depth and adaptability.
“Injuries and changes are part of the game,” Nehra acknowledged. “While players like Hardik Pandya and Shami are irreplaceable, we have experienced individuals like Umesh Yadav and promising talents like Spencer Johnson to step up. IPL is a long tournament, and every player’s contribution is crucial.”
Regarding the pitch conditions, Nehra downplayed the significance of soil types, emphasizing the importance of playing good cricket regardless of surface conditions. Despite having options to tailor pitches to their advantage, Nehra hinted at a more balanced approach.
“We haven’t decided on pitch preparations yet,” Nehra revealed. “Black or red soil, the difference isn’t significant. Ultimately, it’s about playing quality cricket.”
As the Titans prepare for their opening fixture against the Mumbai Indians, led by former Titan Hardik Pandya. Nehra reflected on the changing dynamics of player movements in the IPL.
“Player movements are becoming more common in cricket, similar to other sports like soccer or basketball,” Nehra observed. “While we will miss Hardik, IPL offers new opportunities for players and teams to evolve. Gill’s captaincy journey, along with the experiences gained by all players, will shape our campaign this season.”
Nehra concluded with well wishes for Pandya’s new venture, acknowledging the inevitability of change and growth in the dynamic landscape of the IPL.
