James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, has expressed the need for driver Logan Sargeant to demonstrate ongoing progress throughout the Formula 1 season to secure his position within the team.
Sargeant, currently in his second year with Williams after his rookie season in 2023, garnered his maiden points at the United States Grand Prix last year. However, he concluded the season with 26 fewer points than his more seasoned teammate Alexander Albon. Additionally, Sargeant encountered several significant errors and crashes during the season, failing to out-qualify Albon at any race in 2023.
Despite these challenges, Williams opted to retain Sargeant for the 2024 season. Vowles emphasized that while Sargeant is not expected to deliver immediate major results, he must exhibit progress as the season unfolds.
“It’s crucial for him to achieve positive outcomes,” stated Vowles. “However, it’s not about the early stages exclusively. What we’re looking for is a continuous improvement over time. The notion of ‘early on’ suggests that there’s a risk if he doesn’t perform well after three races, which is not the scenario here.”
Sargeant encountered a car issue in the season opener in Bahrain, resulting in a last-place finish, followed by a 14th-place finish in Saudi Arabia, three positions behind his teammate.
With 24 Grand Prix races already under Sargeant’s belt, Vowles anticipates that the driver will exhibit ongoing development throughout his second season.
“For Logan, he recognizes that he concluded last year by building upon his previous experience,” Vowles remarked. “Returning this season not as a rookie but as a driver with years of experience behind him, he must continue to progress without errors and consistently move forward.”
