In a nail-biting battle for a spot in the 2024 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals, the Virginia Cavaliers (23-9) edged out the Boston College Eagles (19-15) in a heart-stopping overtime thriller on Thursday night. The intense matchup unfolded at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Boston College Shocks Early, Virginia Rallies
The Eagles started strong, splashing six three-pointers in the first half, led by Claudell Harris Jr. who drained three triples within the first few minutes. Despite trailing by as many as ten points early, Virginia didn’t back down. Key contributions from Jake Groves, Taine Murray, and Andrew Rohde off the bench helped the Cavaliers close the gap, heading into halftime down by just 35-29.
Dramatic Finish Forces Overtime
The second half saw Virginia chip away at the deficit and eventually take the lead with clutch free throws by Jake Groves with only 29 seconds remaining. However, Boston College refused to go down without a fight. A buzzer-beating jumper by Mason Madsen sent the game into overtime, leaving the score tied at 57-57.
Cavaliers Dominate Overtime
The extra period showcased Virginia’s defensive prowess as they limited the Eagles to a mere three points. Isaac McKneely, who hadn’t scored in regulation, stepped up with a crucial three-pointer. Reece Beekman followed with an assist for another clutch three, putting UVA up by six. Although Claudell Harris Jr. responded with a three for BC, Virginia answered back with a layup by Jordan Minor assisted by Beekman. Minor then sealed the victory with a steal, propelling the Cavaliers to the ACC Semifinals.
