Ravindra Confirmed for First Australia Test, Conway Undergoes Fitness Assessment

New Zealand opener Devon Conway awaits a fitness assessment on his injured thumb ahead of the first Test against Australia in Wellington. Conway suffered the injury during the second T20I against Australia, and while initial scans ruled out a fracture, specialists need to conduct further assessments. Because he hasn’t trained since the blow, officials will decide on his participation on Wednesday, pending the outcome of the assessments.

Coach Gary Stead confirmed that Conway would not participate in training on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of observing him in the nets before making a final decision on his availability for the Test. Despite Conway’s discomfort, the team remains hopeful of his inclusion, given his significant contribution to the batting lineup.

Rachin Ravindra will return to the playing XI after sitting out the last two T20Is due to knee soreness, while Daryl Mitchell, recovering from a heel issue, is also available for selection. If Conway is able to play, Mitchell will probably bat at No. 5, possibly taking the place of Will Young. If Conway is unable to play, Young will partner with Tom Latham at the top of the batting order.

In other developments, Neil Wagner announced his retirement from international cricket, although his inclusion in the squad for the Wellington Test is ceremonial. Reflecting on past selection decisions, Stead acknowledged the possibility of reintroducing Mitchell Santner into the lineup, considering the conditions and pitch behavior.

With the series against Australia offering an opportunity to improve their record, Stead expressed the team’s readiness to face the current world Test champions. Despite the formidable challenge posed by Australia, New Zealand aims to showcase their skills and competitiveness in the upcoming Tests.
