“Stoinis’ injury is expected to recover quickly, although not in time for this series,” stated CA.

Initially, Aaron Hardie was slated to replace Marcus Stoinis, but he encountered calf tightness during a Sheffield Shield match, prompting the selection of Johnson.

Johnson, known for his left-arm pace, showcased his talent during this year’s Big Bash League. Securing 19 wickets for the Brisbane Heat and earning the Player of the BBL final title.

Following his impressive performances, he secured a lucrative deal with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League Auction.

In New Zealand, Johnson joins a formidable pace attack including Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Ellis. With the T20 World Cup looming, competition for spots in the squad is intense, particularly among fast bowlers.

Johnson’s left-arm bowling offers a strategic option, potentially mirroring Starc’s role in the team. Starc, despite being a proven asset, has not featured in a T20I for Australia since 2022.

Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade will miss the first T20 due to the birth of his third child, with Josh Inglis set to fill in. Additionally, Matt Short and Ellis return to the squad after recovering from minor injuries.

Ellis, eager to make his mark, expressed his determination to seize the opportunity and secure a spot in the World Cup squad.

The first T20 match between New Zealand and Australia will commence at Wellington’s Basin Reserve on Wednesday.
