India’s star spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, has been forced to withdraw from the ongoing third Test against England due to a family medical emergency, a development confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Amit Shah. Unfortunately, his absence might extend to the subsequent Tests as well.
With Ravichandran Ashwin unavailable for the Rajkot Test, India finds themselves in a challenging position. Left with only 10 players and four specialist bowlers for the match.
According to MCC rules, a substitute fielder can be permitted in the event of a player’s injury or illness during the match, albeit with certain restrictions. However, Ashwin’s departure, not stemming from an injury or illness sustained in the ongoing game, doesn’t fit this criterion precisely.
In cases of on-field concussion, a complete replacement is typically allowed. Despite this, other injuries notwithstanding, India is unable to opt for a direct replacement for Ashwin in this scenario.
Nevertheless, there exists a potential avenue for Ashwin to be replaced by a player such as Washington Sundar or Axar Patel, both proficient with both bat and ball, in the second innings. This would necessitate a formal request to England and the consent of Ben Stokes, the English captain.
While the situation presents regulatory hurdles, the possibility of fielding a suitable replacement remains contingent. Upon procedural steps and mutual agreement between the teams involved.
