Indian cricketer Saurabh Tiwary, aged 34, has officially declared his retirement from professional cricket. His final appearance for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy will be on February 15 in Jamshedpur. Saurabh Tiwary, who began his cricket journey at the age of 11, made his mark with a first-class debut during the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy season and played a pivotal role in India’s Under-19 World Cup win in 2008, captained by Virat Kohli.
Tiwary’s Impactful IPL Journey
Notably, Saurabh Tiwary performances for the Mumbai Indians in 2010 earned him an India call-up for the Asia Cup, making his international debut in October of the same year. Despite limited opportunities at the international level, Saurabh Tiwary excelled in domestic cricket, playing 115 first-class matches over 17 years. He holds the record for the most runs for Jharkhand, amassing 8030 runs in 189 innings at an average of 47.51, including 22 centuries and 34 fifties.
At a press conference in Jamshedpur, Saurabh Tiwary expressed that stepping away from the game was a tough decision but believed it was the right time, especially with the emergence of young talent in the Test team. He emphasized his continued connection to cricket despite receiving an offer from politics.
Saurabh Tiwary IPL journey saw highs and lows, with notable contributions to Mumbai Indians and a significant stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore. In IPL 2014, a shoulder injury sidelined him, and he later played for Delhi Daredevils and Rising Pune Supergiant before returning to Mumbai in 2021. His IPL career concludes with 1494 runs at an average of 28.73 and a strike rate of 120.
As a captain, Saurabh Tiwary led his state 88 times across formats and captained East Zone seven times. His List A career, starting in 2006, saw him amassing 4050 runs in 116 games with an impressive average of 46.55.
In the current Ranji season, Jharkhand has faced challenges, securing only one victory in six games and being eliminated from quarter-final contention.
